From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
Iowa Republican U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson says she will not run for Iowa governor. Earlier this month, Governor Kim Reynolds announced she would not seek another term in next year’s election. In a statement, Hinson says she decided to stay focused on her mission in Washington to work with President Donald Trump. Former State Representative Brad Sherman is the only Republican to officially announce a campaign for governor so far. As for Democrats, Paul Dahl of Webster City has announced his campaign.
Police say a man who was hurt in a motorcycle crash in northwest Cedar Rapids lied about it and now faces charges. At the time, police say David Glandon claimed another vehicle ran him off the road in the 1800 block of Edgewood Road last Wednesday. An investigation found this was not true and he recanted. Witnesses indicated his was the only vehicle involved. Prosecutors charged him with failure to maintain control and making falsified reports. A GoFundMe for him was initially set up after the crash blaming a blue Nissan with three people inside for intentionally running him off the road.
Cyclists, walkers and runners are one step closer to a safer way to cross the Cedar River. Connect CR held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday morning for the $15 million Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian bridge. Once the bridge is complete, it will connect the NewBo and Czech Village areas. It will also connect to the Great American Rail-Trail, allowing people to bike from coast to coast.
Bear sightings are growing more common in Iowa with one of the latest reported by Dubuque County Conservation walking in the middle of the street in Dubuque County. They say it has been living in the area for a few years. Iowa DNR says black bears are native to Iowa, but were hunted to extinction nearly 200 years ago. The DNR also says Dubuque, which sits on the Mississippi River, offers a stable habitat for bears which are emerging from hibernation right now. Bears are most active during breeding season, which is from late-May to early-June, which means black bears are likely to make more appearances this spring.
