BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – One person is dead and another was seriously injured from a head-on collision on Highway 20 Sunday evening in Black Hawk County. Authorities identified the driver killed as 50-year-old Tracy Leytem of Cedar Rapids. The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office got multiple calls shortly after 7:30 p.m. about a crash on Highway 20 near the exit to Highways 58 and 27. A preliminary investigation determined that Leytem’s SUV crossed the center line of the road for an unknown reason and struck another SUV a mile before the exit. Leytem was later pronounced dead at Mercy One Waterloo. The other driver was flown to the UI Health Care Medical Center for care. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the collision.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids Public Works Department says part of 34th Street Southeast will close to through traffic for construction. Starting Tuesday afternoon, the road will be closed between Terry Drive and Bever Avenue. The road will be closed through early November for a full pavement replacement, as well as storm sewer and water main infrastructure improvements. Local access will be available for residents in the area. Posted detours will go around the construction through Cottage Grove Avenue, East Post Road and Mount Vernon Road.
AMES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard announced the university will start selling alcohol at Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum. Alcohol sales will be available at the start of football season, as well as during basketball season. The change is in part a new way to bring in sales, Pollard said. A portion of the proceeds from alcohol sales will also go toward “alcohol education, student wellness programming, and public safety enhancements, to support a safe and welcoming community.” There are some new gameday rules with the addition of alcohol sales, including that guests will not be allowed to leave and re-enter Jack Trice Stadium during the game.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he pointed a stolen rifle at a man. Officers were called to a disturbance on the 1300 block of Hinkley Avenue on Thursday and say Markeese Meeks robbed a loaded AR-15 from a man and intimidated him with it. A criminal complaint says Meeks pointed the gun at the victim and told him he would shoot. Meeks faces felony charges of first-degree robbery with intent to cause serious injury, trafficking stolen weapons and going armed with intent. He is also charged with misdemeanor crimes of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, use of a dangerous weapon in commission of a crime, harassment and being ineligible to carry a firearm.
