Iowa farmers have finally been able to get in the field after several rain delays. Now that harvest is underway across most of the Corn Belt, propane suppliers are keeping a close eye on crop conditions and weather forecasts. Since this fall has been so wet, there may be heavy grain drying demand in some areas, but industry leaders say propane supplies remain strong, and preparations are already underway to meet the needs of farmers across the Midwest. Michael Newland, director of agriculture business development at the Propane Education & Research Council,  said propane supplies improve every year, so they are prepared for intense grain drying demand.

Newland said propane marketers monitor crop moisture conditions throughout the growing season, giving them time to anticipate demand and prepare for regional spikes.

Newland says propane demand is growing in agriculture as producers look for alternatives to higher-cost energy sources, particularly for irrigation systems.

With diesel prices continuing to pressure farmers, Newland says the economics of propane are becoming more attractive.

PERC also offers incentive programs to help offset the cost of adopting propane-powered equipment, like irrigation engines, livestock building heaters, and generators. More information on available rebates and programs can be found at propane.com.
