BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A man has been arrested for killing his grandfather in rural Black Hawk County. The Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Elk Run Road for an unknown reason Saturday evening. When officers arrived, they found 75-year-old Gale Anthony Mervin dead and 21-year-old Eric Paul O’Connell II hiding in another room. There was also a sign of a struggle in the home. O’Connell was taken to the hospital for examination; that’s when the office says he confessed to killing his grandfather. The two lived together. O’Connell is now at the Black Hawk County Jail and has been charged with 1st Degree Murder.

FLOYD COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa State Patrol said two people are injured after a head-on collision in Floyd County Saturday. Officials said a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling east on Highway 18 when it lost control and crossed the median, crashing head-on into a 2017 Ford F350. ISP said the Ford entered the ditch, where its trailer overturned. The truck then caught on fire. The Dodge came to rest in the westbound lanes. The driver of the Dodge truck had to be extracted by a local fire department. Both were transported to local hospitals. We don’t know the extent of their injuries. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating.

COGGON, Iowa (KCRG) – One person is injured after a motorcycle accident in rural Coggon Saturday night. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office was called to Robinson Road and Castle Lane in rural Coggon around 6:30 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders found a Harley-Davidson FLHXS Street Glide in a ditch with its driver. After investigation, officials found the driver was heading north on Robison Road when he lost control and entered the ditch, throwing him from the motorcycle. The driver was not wearing a helmet. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was charged with failure to maintain control and driving while license under suspension. The crash is under investigation for possible Operating While Intoxicated.

GUTTENBERG, Iowa (KCRG) – The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said one person is injured after a plane crash in rural Guttenberg Saturday night. The Sheriff’s Office said it received multiple calls around 6:00 p.m. reporting that an aircraft had crashed into a residence on Abel Island in rural Guttenberg. Upon arrival, first responders determined a multicolored ultralight aircraft had been attempting to take off from the Abel Island Airport when it lost control. Officials said the aircraft struck power lines in the area before crashing onto the roof of a residence. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The crash is under investigation by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
