From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
Iowa lawmakers are to meet today in special session as we learn more about a multi-billion dollar steel plant proposal and how much taxpayers may be asked to fund. Governor Kim Reynolds called for the special session after President Trump announced this week plans for the $15 billion steel plant, expected to create more than 5,000 construction jobs and 1,750 permanent Iowa jobs. Republican lawmakers have generally praised the idea, while Democrat lawmakers have said they want to hear about the details first. There have been few details, even the location in Lee County, south of Burlington, isn’t certain. Mesabi Metallics could build the plant near the multi-billion dollar fertilizer manufacturing plant in Wever, which opened after getting historic tax credits ten years ago.
Several areas saw flooding after continuous rains fell throughout eastern Iowa over the last two days. Dike-New Hartford High School had to cancel classes yesterday. The ninth grade Wolverines will not play today, but the varsity game is still on as scheduled. A flood warning is in effect until late this morning in parts of Muscatine, Louisa, and Washington counties. Minor flooding is being monitored along the Iowa, Cedar, Wapsipinicon, and English rivers.
A motorcyclist has died from injuries he suffered after a crash last month in Black Hawk County. It happened September 11 near the Intersection of Highway 63 and Cedar Wapsi Road by Denver. Deputies says 67-year-old Richard Menninga of Waverly crashed into the back of a car while turning onto the highway. First responders took him to a hospital before he was airlifted to another hospital. He died Tuesday. The crash is still under investigation.
