The mental health of a Marion father found not guilty of his son’s murder could be reconsidered by a judge today. A judge found Matthew Schleier not guilty by reason of insanity after he strangled his 5-year-old son in October 2024. He was admitted to the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for mental health treatment. As part of the treatment, an assessment is sent to the judge and Schleier’s lawyers every 60 days. The judge will decide if Schleier is still a danger to himself or others. If he’s not, he could be released.

Several news laws take effect today in Iowa. Iowa will now be the final state in the country to make animal torture a first offense felony. Previously, people who were convicted of animal abuse could have other neglect or torture crimes elevated to a felony. This law now makes animal torture a felony for those without a history of animal abuse. Another new law makes a pilot program permanent, helping cover the cost of childcare for daycare workers. A third law will let drivers legally drive 60 miles an hour on rural two-lane state highways. This is a change from the decades-long 55 miles an hour speed limit.

The Iowa Supreme Court says executives can be held liable for their company’s actions. This is over a lawsuit the DNR filed against Global Fiberglass Solutions. That company was hired to recycle hundreds of wind turbine blades. Instead, they dumped parts in places like Newton and Atlantic. The lawsuit named the company’s two top executives. They argued they shouldn’t be liable, because they were never in Iowa. The high court disagreed.
