The November ballot is all but official. Primary elections last night narrowed the field. The Republican race for Governor was incredibly close with Zach Lahn beating Randy Feenstra, who got President Trump’s endorsement Friday. The vote difference was only 1,700 votes, and less than one percent separated the two. Lahn got the more than 35 percent of the Republican vote needed to avoid nomination by state convention. Lahn faces Democrat Rob Sand in November. Sand ran unopposed in the Democrat primary.
Ashley Hinson easily won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate and will face Josh Turek. Turek beat Zach Wahls for the Democrat nomination.
For the third time, Mariannette Miller-Meeks will face Democrat Christina Bohannan for First District Congress, which includes Iowa City, the Quad Cities and southeast Iowa.
Democrat Lindsay James will face Republican Joe Mitchell in the Second District, which this includes Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Dubuque and northeast Iowa.
Muscatine Polilce have released the names of the victims in Monday’s mass shooting that killed six people in one family. A memorial vigil was held last night for 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, 20-year-old Ryle McFarland, 16-year-old Mark McFarland, 13-year-old Ryan McFarland, 32-year-old Dakota Whitlow and 29-year-old Austin Harris. Police say 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland was the man who shot his victims at three different locations. He shot himself as police approached him Monday.
A house fire early yesterday morning in Johnson County left one person dead. The fire on Johnson Cedar Road Northeast in West Branch was reported at about 4:30 in the morning. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Matt Degner’s resignation as superintendent of the Iowa City Public Schools was made official at a special meeting last night, but not without some push back. Degner will take over next month as the executive director of secondary schools, earning a salary of more than $180,000.
Street closures started this morning in preparation for the Cedar Rapids Marathon. Public Works officials say 1st Street SW from 2nd Avenue to 3rd Avenue will be closed through 6:00 a.m. on Monday. A no parking/tow away zone will be in effect. The marathon is Sunday.
