From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

Shane Teslik took to the stand Tuesday to recount his experience the night he stabbed Devonna Walker outside a Cedar Rapids apartment complex in January of last year. The defense played video of the incident including the fight before the stabbing. That was initially just between Walker and Teslik’s then-fiancé, Jessie Chavez. In court, Teslik admitted to having a knife in his hand as he stood in the doorway of Chavez’s apartment because he claims he was preparing dinner. He also admitted to calling Walker the “n word”. Teslik went on to say he is not proud of using that word. He is charged with voluntary manslaughter.

More than 40 animals have been rescued from a home in Delaware County. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office says almost 20 dogs and two dozen cats were removed from the home in Manchester. They say 7 dead dogs and 1 dead cat were also found. The case remains under investigation and charges are pending against the animals’ owners.

A bill that says landlords can require tenants to provide medical proof of a disability if they want an assistance animal is on the governor’s desk. This bill changes how landlords respond to requests for people with disabilities, giving them more power to challenge tenants. Tenants are not required to disclose their disability. But, if asked, will have to get a letter from a licensed health care professional to verify their disability. Supporters say the legislation will help to make sure people who want assistance animals can get them while preventing abuse of the system.

Issues with the federal college aid program known as FAFSA has colleges like the University of Dubuque offering new help for incoming and existing students. The University will extend its admission and deposit deadline by one month to June 1. The online FAFSA application didn’t open until late December 2023, almost two months later than usual, because of a major overhaul by the Department of Education to the application that students and families must complete to apply for federal student aid. The University of Dubuque says it wants to provide families with the time they need to make an informed choice about where to attend college.
