A 14-year old boy is being charged with attempted murder of peace officer. Police say Christopher McDaniel shot at officers at a gas station Thursday morning. It happened at the Big 10 Mart on Boyson Road in Hiawatha. Officials say he flashed a gun at a customer and then shot at least twice at officers. The juvenile surrendered and was taken into custody. No one was hurt during the incident.
A protest organized by the group Students for Justice in Palestine is set to begin today at the University of Iowa. Students, faculty and community members say they plan to gather for a peaceful protest from noon to 7, and then continue with events and demonstrations through Sunday. The student-led organization Students for Justice in Palestine released a statement saying it intends to have a peaceful protest on the Pentacrest. Protests have been emerging all across the country as the war continues between Israel and Hamas. Most have been pro-Palestine, but there have also been counter protests.
City High Principal John Bacon says students who participate in a possible School Walk Out today in Iowa City will need to have parental permission, or face an unexcused absence. A group called City Students for Palestine posted plans for what it calls a “School Strike” as a show of solidarity during school hours today. Principal Bacon sent an e-mail saying students have the right to participate in organized protests and walkouts but must have a minimal disruption to the school.
Western Iowa Congressman Randy Feenstra is recovering today after outpatient surgery to treat a blood clot in his leg. His official account on “X” said his doctor wants him to remain in Washington until he’s fully recovered.
Dubuque city parks will open for the season tomorrow. Park restrooms, fountains, and facilities will be available to the public again. Hours vary at the city’s 48 parks, with most open from 7 in the morning until 10 at night.
The Food Bank of Iowa received a huge surprise this week after they received a donation of more than 14,000 dozen eggs. The donation came from the Iowa Egg Council. All together, it totals up to nearly 170,000 eggs.
