CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Police have cleared the scene after investigating a report about a suspicious package at Cedar Rapids City Hall Monday morning. Police confirmed they received a call about the package at 101 1st Street Southeast, at about 7:47 a.m. The building was evacuated while the suspicious package was investigated. The Cedar Rapids Metro Hazardous Devices Unit found the package and determined that it did not pose a threat. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (IOWA’S NEWS NOW) – This Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence is headed to Cedar Rapids, and Coralville, Iowa. In Cedar Rapids, Pence will take part in a fireside chat during a luncheon with a book signing. That evening, Pence will deliver remarks at the Johnson County Republicans Reagan Dinner in Coralville.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (IOWA’S NEWS NOW) – A Cedar Rapids man is now behind bars after being accused of sexually abusing a child starting at the age of 6. Frank Volmar Acevedo, 53, is charged with four counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count each of continuous sexual abuse of a child, indecent contact with a child and indecent exposure. The child told the Child Protection Center that Acevedo abused her several times in two locations in Cedar Rapids in 2021 and 2022.  According to a criminal complaint, the child said the abuse started when she was 6 or 7 and living out of state. A no-contact order has been issued on behalf of the child. Acevedo is being held in the Linn County Jail.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (IOWA’S NEWS NOW) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is looking for your help over the illegal dumping of 13 coyote carcasses. The carcasses were found on Saturday on Eagle Ave SW just north of Rohret Road in Johnson County. Iowa’s wanton waste law requires that the usable portion of game or fur bearing animals be removed from the field. In addition, it is unlawful to dispose of carcasses in a road ditch.
