MINDEN, Iowa (WOWT/KCRG) – Friday’s outbreak of tornadoes across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa has turned deadly. A Minden man died from his injuries after being trapped in his basement during Friday’s storm. A family member tells 6 News Nicholas Ring was taken to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha once he was freed. He died Saturday night. The storms flattened a portion of the town of about 600 people, located on the northern edge of Pottawattamie County. Some homes had been pulled from their foundations, torn apart from the ground. Damage was particularly expansive on the east side of Minden, were about half of homes there were severely damaged. Three others in Minden were injured. All of them were treated and released.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (KCCI/KCRG) – A body with a gunshot wound was found in a Webster County ditch on Friday afternoon and now two Fort Dodge men are in custody. The Fort Dodge men are in custody after a rural mail carrier reported a body found in a ditch in the 2100 mile of 280th Street. This information came from the Fort Dodge Police Department. Webster County Sheriff’s Deputies were sent to the scene and identified the body as 55-year-old Dennis R. Jones from Fort Dodge. After inspecting the scene, they deduced that Jones hadn’t been shot at the location where his body was found. Therefore a search warrant occurred at 1440 Second Avenue S. in Fort Dodge. 26-year-old Alec R. Jones has been charged with first-degree murder. 21-year-old Nathan T. Jones has been charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder. They are both in custody at the Webster County Jail. The homicide is still under investigation and anyone with information should contact the Fort Dodge Police.

RYAN, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa State Patrol has identified the man killed in a collision Friday in rural Ryan as 39-year-old Kyle Kelchen of Manchester. The incident happened at 2:18 p.m. at the intersection of 190th Ave and 310th Street. State Patrol says Kelchen was driving a Polaris Ranger UTV southbound on 190th Ave when he failed to stop at a stop sign. The vehicle was then struck truck by a pick-up truck traveling eastbound on 310th Street. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch. Kelchen died from his injuries. Two people from Monticello inside the second vehicle survived, but were injured. They were not taken to the hospital. Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.

DECORAH, Iowa (KCRG) – Daniel John Hammel, 27, of Decorah is facing a charge of Attempted Murder after an incident resulting in a standoff with police Saturday morning. On April 27, around 1:20 a.m., the Decorah Police Department was notified of an assault that had occurred at a residence in Decorah that had resulted in significant injury to the victim.  The victim was able to advise law enforcement that the suspect, Hammel, was still at the home, with access to firearms within the residence. A negotiation team of city and county officials, along with an ISP negotiator made attempts to contact Hammel, but did not succeed. That’s when police say “additional tactical methods” were used to establish contact with Hammel who was placed under arrest without further incident. This scene was contained, and there are no on going public safety concerns related to this incident. This case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information on this incident should contact the Decorah Police Department.
