A Cedar Rapids man is facing charges in connection with the death of Chris Bagley in 2018. Andy Shaw is accused of ordering a hitman to kill Bagley after Bagley stole from him. Bagley’s body was found buried in the yard of one of his assailants in March of 2019. Shaw was arraigned on three charges: murder in the first degree, solicitation to commit murder, and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. Although Bagley was killed in 2018, this is the first time Shaw has been charged in connection with his death. Shaw has been in prison on an eight year sentence for federal gun and drug charges.
A teen charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old in Cedar Rapids earlier this year will be tried as an adult. A judge has denied Tramontez Lockett’s motion to have his case moved to juvenile court. Lockett and two other teens are charged with murder in the February shooting death of 16-year-old Michael McCune in the 1600 block of F Avenue Northwest. A fourth teen is charged with theft and being an accessory to a crime.
The Iowa City Community School District has released the list of 70 books removed from schools due to Iowa’s new law banning any books that depict or talk about sexual acts. Some of the books include Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends with Us” and “It Starts with Us,” Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Also, Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple,” and Stieg Larsson’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Superintendent Matt Degner says the book review process is on-going.
The “Meals on Wheels” program at Horizons in Cedar Rapids needs more volunteers. Horizons says it’s an essential program to make sure hot meals get to people who may not be able to leave their homes. ”Meals on Wheels” serves roughly 450 people on a daily basis– many who are seniors or people living with disabilities.
Areas of eastern Iowa are already starting to announce holiday light displays. Venue Works announced it will have an event called “Five Season Lights” this year along the Cedar River at the McGrath Amphitheatre, starting December 1. Proceeds are going to local non-profits.
