Collins Aerospace has confirmed it is cutting some of its workforce. An official says it’s less than 800 of the total 80,000 that work for the company, but we don’t know exactly how many layoffs happened in Cedar Rapids. The company released a statement, saying they’re “implementing targeted cost-saving actions across the business, including a minor workforce reduction, in order to position the business for sustainable growth.
A judge has found Jack McCaffery guilty of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. That pedestrian died about two weeks later. McCaffery was 16 at the time of the crash and the son of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery. Police say McCaffery hit 45-year-old Corey Hite while he jogged in the crosswalk at Melrose Avenue and Kennedy Parkway. The crash happened in May and Hite died about two weeks later. Witnesses say traffic had slowed as another driver waved Hite across the road. McCaffery will be sentenced on October 13th.
The NCAA has denied defensive tackle Noah Shannon’s appeal for eligibility for the 2023 season. Shannon was the first Hawkeye to admit his involvement in the Iowa sports gambling investigation in July. The NCAA suspended him after he gambled on at least one University of Iowa sports game. It was reportedly not an Iowa Hawkeyes football game. Shannon is not facing any criminal charges. Since he is a sixth year senior, his college playing career is effectively over.
The Dubuque City Council will hold a public hearing on October 16 to consider a proposed development agreement with a developer to build a $45 million, 201 unit housing development on Hawthorne Street. The City owns the former Bowling and Beyond property. The City would sell the property to an Indiana-based multi-family housing developer that creates market-rate, workforce, affordable, and student housing communities. The proposed purchase price for the property is approximately $4 million.
