Donald Trump has been indicted on felony charges for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol. The Justice Department’s four-count indictment Tuesday accuses the former president of assaulting the underpinnings of democracy. In response, Eastern Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson linked the indictment to investigations into President Biden and his family. She tweeted, “Another Biden scandal, another Trump indictment–just like clockwork. We must stop this un-American politicization of the judicial system.”

Prosecutors are charging Cyclones starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers with illegally gambling on Iowa State sports, including football. Prosecutors say he falsified electronic sports wagering records by concealing his personal identity. Iowa State football player Dodge Sauser, wrestler Paniro Johnson, and ISU grad Eyioma Uwazurike–now suspended from the Denver Broncos–are also accused of sports wagering and tampering with evidence. Sauser allegedly placed 12 wagers on Iowa State games. Johnson is alleged to have placed 25 wagers on Iowa State events. According to a criminal complaint filed in Story County, Hunter Dekkers is accused falsifying personal sports wagering records while he placed more than two dozen wagers on Iowa State sporting events, including the 2021 football game against Oklahoma State. Dekkers did not play in that game.

Today, the Iowa Board of Regents will consider approval of the budgets for the three universities. The Board requested a $32 million state appropriations increase, but the General Assembly decided to keep appropriations flat for the coming year. General fund expenses related to instruction, academic support and scholarships and fellowships represent more than 70% of combined general university expenses.

100 Iowa National Guard troops will be stationed at the U.S. Southern border in Texas later this month. Governor Reynolds announced this plan in May after a meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott about border security. The troops will be deployed for 30 days in August. Then 30 public safety officers will be assigned for 30 days in September. Gov. Reynolds has not said what those deployed to Texas will do.
