CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) – Just before 7 a.m. the Black Hawk County Dispatch Center got a 911 call which reported that a bicyclist who was riding the trails had found a large fire inside the locked compost facility located in the 300 block of East Main Street in Cedar Falls. The caller said the flames were 6-8 feet tall and on a large pile of debris. Crews found an active fire on a large brush pile that was around half the size of a football field. More firefighters were called in to help shuttle water to the fire since there aren’t any fire hydrants in the area. Public Works staff were also called to help operate large machinery to move brush and compost. The City Staff was helped by private contractors to pump water from a pond. Firefighters are also working to prevent the fire’s spread by dousing nearby brush piles. According to Cedar Falls Fire Rescue, the compost site is closed until further notice.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Law enforcement officials are notifying the public of a man who was on pre-trial release for attempted murder charges who has apparently cut off his monitoring device. Ali Younes, 19, was on house arrest with his family in O’Brien County pending trial for charges of attempted murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree theft for an incident that took place on April 25, 2022. Officials said that Younes allegedly robbed and strangled a person outside of Art Building West on the University of Iowa campus and was arrested less than 24 hours later. A judge granted Younes conditional pre-trial release, which required him to wear a GPS monitoring device, as well as surrender his passport and stay with his family. Officials in the Johnson County Attorney’s Office were notified on Saturday that Younes had removed his monitoring device, with law enforcement officials unable to locate him. If you know of Younes’ location, call 911. Law enforcement strongly recommends that individuals do not approach him.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa City Police are investigating after three people were stabbed early Saturday morning. Authorities were called to the 300 block of South Gilbert Street around 2 a.m. in response to a large fight. Upon arrival multiple subjects fled the scene. Three people were sent to the hospital with stab wounds and are expected to recover. Police say that the initial investigation revealed the fight was among parties known to each other and that there is no direct threat to the general public.
AMES, Iowa (KCRG) — More than 70 tips have poured in after an Iowa nurse practitioner who is accused of photographing a teen’s genitals during an exam was arrested on sex crime charges. Several districts and one university also have issued alerts that 44-year-old Carl Markley performed school physicals for their students, although none of the charges against him allege that crimes occurred during those exams. Markley, who is free on bond, is charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, pimping, prostitution and human trafficking. The charges were filed in two batches, and police in Ames arrested him the second time Monday.
