IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – In response to the C6-Zero facility explosion, the City of Iowa City Water Division took samples from the Iowa River to see if compounds associated with petroleum products were detected in the water. The explosion at a facility operated by C6-Zero in Marengo earlier this month injured 15 people. The DNR said stormwater sample analysis taken around the facility after the explosion showed evidence of contamination in excess of statewide water quality standards. But DNR officials say they believe the contaminate wastewater was contained to a stormwater basin near the C6-Zero facility and would not hit the Iowa River. Iowa City officials said the Water Division would conduct a sampling of the Iowa River to double-check contaminant levels. Following analysis of the sample, no reportable detection of contaminants was found in the river. The Water Division will continue to test the river weekly for the next three weeks.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska company is recalling alfalfa sprouts sold in three states after 16 cases of salmonella were linked to the food. SunSprouts said Thursday it is recalling sprouts that were sold at restaurants and grocery stores in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas. Nebraska health officials urged people to stop eating alfalfa sprouts after it confirmed the illnesses. So far no illnesses have been confirmed in other states, but the FDA is conducting a multistate investigation. Salmonella infections cause diarrhea and fever. Most people recover, but federal officials estimate that 26,500 people are hospitalized and 450 die from salmonella infections every year. The recalled alfalfa sprouts have expiration dates between Dec. 10 and Dec. 27 and carry lot numbers of either 4211 or 5211.

GRINNELL, Iowa (KCRG) – Officials in Poweshiek County are investigating following an early morning shooting in Grinnell. It happened at approximately 1:40 a.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Pearl Street. That’s a residential area just west of downtown. Investigators say several adults were engaged in a verbal argument that turned physical. Officials say a handgun was produced and then multiple shots were fired. An adult male was struck by the gunfire and taken to a local hospital. He is reportedly in stable condition. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting Grinnell Police with the investigation.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The individual involved with the shooting that took place in the 2200 block of Glass Road NE with Cedar Rapids Police back in July has filed a motion to change the venue of his upcoming trial. On July 30th, Cedar Rapids Police officers attempted to pull over 23-year-old Brandon Lee Nelson, who was reportedly driving erratically. Officials said that the driver of the vehicle allegedly pulled out a firearm, leading to shots being exchanged between the person and two officers. Nelson sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange. The police officers involved were not injured. Nelson’s defense argues that he would not receive a fair and impartial trial if the trial is held in Linn County. A hearing on the matter is set for January 20th, 2023. His trial date is currently scheduled for May 2nd, 2023.
