BREMER COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – At approximately 8:29 am, the Iowa State Patrol responded to a report of an accident on Highway 218 Northbound near mile marker 195. Officials say that a 2014 Chevy Impala was driving southbound on the highway when it dropped off onto the shoulder of the road. The vehicle reportedly overcorrected and crossed over the median into the path of northbound lanes where it was struck by a 2010 Toyota Highlander. A State Patrol official confirmed the Chevy Impala was a driver’s education vehicle. Two 14-year-old students in the Chevy and a 44-year-old driver of the Toyota were injured in the accident. The 71-year-old driving instructor was killed in the accident. That instructor was also the Mayor of Fairbank, Gregory (Mike) Harter. The accident remains under investigation.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Monday afternoon, Cedar Rapids police were called after a staff member at Mercy Medical Center reported seeing a suspicious item left by the curb along 10th Street near the Hall Perrine Cancer Center (HPCC). Per safety protocols, the CRPD bomb squad was sent to evaluate the suspicious item out of an abundance of caution. Officials determined that the item was not a threat and it was safely removed. A statement by Mercy Medical Center indicated that “…additional precautionary measures were taken during the investigation including rerouting traffic and patients in the vicinity. Mercy takes any possible threat to the safety of our employees and patients very seriously and carried out its protocols to address the situation.”
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A judge has granted Jeremy Goodale, one of the two teens charged in the death of a Fairfield Spanish teacher, his request to change the location of his upcoming murder trial. Goodale is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Nohema Graber. The judge will determine the new location of his trial at a later date. The other teen charged, Willard Miller, has already filed similar motions successfully. His trial will be held in Council Bluffs. Graber was 66 years old when she was killed in November of last year. Her body was found hidden in Chataqua Park, a place she liked to walk. Investigators say she had extensive head trauma and believed she was beaten with a baseball bat.
KENDALLVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) – Two adults and two children were rescued after being stranded on a small island on the Upper Iowa River on Saturday. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office said the people were kayaking at about noon when they became stranded on the small island, located north of Kendallville – which is northwest of Decorah. The sheriff’s office made the rescue along with the Decorah Fire Department, Harmony Fire Department and the Iowa DNR. The kayakers were visiting from the Homestead and North Liberty area.
