WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – Waterloo police said one person is dead after a shooting early Sunday. Officers were called to the parking lot at 516 W. Mullan Avenue around 1:00 am Sunday for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a male inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Police said lifesaving measures were conducted at the scene before the victim was taken to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead. The victim’s name is not being released at this time, pending notification of family. Police said at this time, the incident appears to be isolated with no active threat to the community. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids man has been arrested and is accused of stabbing another man about a dozen times. Police say 34-year-old Gavin Miller was seen in surveillance video stabbing a man after a fight in a Cedar Rapids apartment building around 1:20 a.m. Records say Miller was doing a stabbing motion at the victim’s head and neck area. The hallway was covered in blood. Miller was arrested after police spotted him walking near the Coe College campus with bloody hands and no shoes. Police say he also admitted to being intoxicated. Miller is charged with Public Intoxication and Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. Court records do not identify the victim or share details about his condition.
MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC/KCRG) – Deere & Co. and the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America are still debating a potential contract extension. Earlier this month, company leaders proposed a two-year contract extension they said would enhance wages, benefits and protections, according to a media release. Deere leaders said they were clear that they weren’t interested in engaging in early negotiations but the UAW made a counteroffer roughly half a billion dollars over the company’s proposal. “That counteroffer is contrary to Deere’s goal of providing continuity and certainty for our employees when equipment demand is down and the market outlook remains uncertain,” leaders said in the release. Deere leaders said they have told the UAW that they don’t accept the counteroffer and remain firm on their offer. The union is expected to vote on Deere’s offer on Aug. 23, Deere leaders said. The current agreement is set to expire in fall 2027.
POLK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – Libertarian candidate Rick Stewart will remain on the ballot in the northeast Iowa Congressional race following a Friday ruling from a Polk County judge. A Polk County District Court Judge ruled Stewart can remain on the ballot in the Second Congressional District race. His candidacy was challenged because his nomination papers used the name “Richard” and his affidavit of candidacy used “Rick.” Stewart will face Democrat Lindsay James and Republican Joe Mitchell in November. In central Iowa, Libertarian Marco Battaglia is off the ballot because his legal name is Mark Anderson. Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott and Republican incumbent Zach Nunn are the two candidates remaining on the Third Congressional District ballot.
