James Carville has been an identifiable voice in American politics since the Bill Clinton effort in 1992, and frequently appears on all manner of cable talk programs.
It’s never a secret where he stands on issues and people—like Donald Trump. But he had some direct advice for members of his party this week; namely, stop fighting the voter ID issue.
Carville says he believes there is a negligible amount of voter fraud…but by refusing to go along with photo ID and similar measures, he thinks Democrats look weak on the issue…as if they don’t care about voter fraud.
He notes that his state of Louisiana requires voters to show a drivers license or similar identification at the polling place. Rather than fighting so strenuously against ID requirements, since three-quarters of Americans are in favor, in his words, “just quit fighting, go along with it, and move to the next thing”.
Carville was careful to point out he is not in favor of the SAVE America Act or requiring proof of citizenship, but the hard line against even the most minimal ID requirement is going to hurt his party.
“It’s all a stupid argument. But maybe we could just come up with a simple thing and just say, ‘Okay, we’re for this. Bye. Thank you.’ Get the hell out of this argument,” he said.
But what does he know. He only got the last centrist Democrat elected to the presidency twice.
