From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
Cedar Rapids police are investigating what they are calling an ‘unattended death.’ Officers responded to an area near the 35 block of Queen Drive Southwest a little after 10:30 yesterday morning. Police say they found a woman’s body in a wooded area across from the Target store along Edgewood Road and 33rd Avenue. Police say they are trying to identify the person.
Johnson County will not be spending more money for immigrant services in the coming year. A budget amendment backed by the immigrant advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz was voted down by supervisors. The vote was 3 to 2. It would have provided money for community stabilization and legal services. Two supervisors voted in favor of the motion, saying the organization’s work removes barriers that immigrant communities face. But those who opposed the amendment said the budget process should be changed to better address such requests.
Johnson County may consider the creation of a task force that looks into gun violence. The discussion comes just days after a shooting in the Iowa City pedestrian mall injured five people, including one person in critical condition with a head wound. County supervisors discussed a gun violence task force during their meeting yesterday, but some say there are already groups like the Johnson County Community Violence Intervention that address the violence. No decision was made, but Board chair Jon Green says the discussion will continue.
Johnson County leaders are moving forward with plans for a new jail, but the big questions are still where will it go and how big it’ll be. The County Board did rule out property it owns at the Historic Poor Farm site for a potential new jail. Right now, the plan is to build a jail to hold 120 beds, with room to expand in the future. The County says it is looking at a plat of private property where it’s safer for deputies to respond instead of the downtown location where the jail is currently located.
And the opening of the YMCA at College Community School District will open later than first expected. College Community’s school superintendent says storm damage back in March is pushing the opening date of the new Prairie Summit YMCA to August of this year. The new YMCA should be open in time for the first year of the Prairie Swimming and Diving teams.
