A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting four University of Iowa students. The judge ordered their student statuses to be reinstated. This comes after ICE revoked the students’ visas earlier this month. The students filed a lawsuit saying ICE is violating federal immigration regulations and that ICE’s actions go against the Fifth Amendment right to due process.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating after they say Cascade High School students used artificial intelligence to generate fake nude photos of several female classmates. In a statement from the Western Dubuque Community School District, Superintendent Dan Butler says the school has taken disciplinary action against the perpetrators “in accordance with the school’s policies.” Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy says his team and the Cascade Police Department are investigating the incident.
The Board of Regents could raise student tuition next school year. Undergraduate students at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University would see their tuition go up by 3 percent. In-state students and undergrad students at the University of Northern Iowa would see an increase of 2.7 percent. The Regents are expected to take action on the increases at their June meeting in Iowa City.
Some Iowa lawmakers are trying to keep older doctors in the field to address the shortage of physicians. It would create a new license for doctors 60 years old and older. The bill cuts licensing fees in half and eliminates continuing education requirements. Iowa would be the only state in the country with this kind of medical license. The Senate already passed the bill; it now goes to a House committee for consideration.
Cedar Rapids city leaders broke ground on the first new hotel in the downtown area in nearly 50 years. The new 123-room AC by Marriott hotel will be built on 2nd Avenue SW, right behind Big Grove Brewery, and next to Pickle Palace. Another hotel is planned for the NewBo District. The goal is that all those rooms will make Cedar Rapids a more attractive place to host bigger sporting events and conventions.
