From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

Republican incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks will return to Congress for a third term. The Associated Press has officially called the race for Iowa’s First Congressional District. The race was one of the last in the nation to be settled. On election night, Miller-Meeks had an 800-vote lead over her challenger, Democrat Christina Bohannan. Bohannan called for a recount, which wrapped up yesterday in the District’s 20 counties. The results were little changed and the Associated Press called it for Miller-Meeks Wednesday afternoon. The results of that recount will be officially certified by the state on Monday.

A bystander pulled a man from a burning home in Palo yesterday morning. It happened around 5:30 a.m. in the 700 block of 2nd Street. A bystander pulled 43-year-old Scott Lane from the home. Lane and a firefighter who was hurt were both taken to the hospital. They’re both expected to recover from their injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Iowa’s top two Republicans are voicing optimism that President-Elect Trump’s threatened tariff hikes against China, Canada, and Mexico is more of a bluff than a policy move. Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley told reporters he’s concerned about the impacts of a potential trade war, but he thinks Trump is using it as a bargaining chip. Gov. Kim Reynolds says she thinks the threat is needed to help deter another huge migration of illegal immigrants into this country. Trump said he will impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, and add an additional 10 percent tariff on goods from China, when he takes office in January.

A Dubuque railroad crossing on East 15th Street is closed permanently. It marks the start of an effort to create a quiet zone downtown, where trains don’t need to blow their horn. Redirecting traffic from there lets Dubuque eliminates a spot where trains need to sound their horns.

And good travel conditions are expected to continue through the holiday weekend thanks to dry–albeit cold–weather. Some icy conditions were reported in far northwest Iowa, near Sioux Falls, S.D., thanks to some freezing rain Wednesday afternoon.
