Today is Election Day. Polls in Iowa open at 7 this morning and will close at 8 this evening. And for anyone who has not returned an absentee ballot, you can still take it to the polls and you can also register to vote at the polls. But you do need to bring a valid driver’s license as well as proof of address.

Iowa has activated its National Guard ahead of Election Day. It’s one of 10 states to do so. Eight other states also have their National Guards on standby. The Guard is being asked to help with cybersecurity efforts or assist law enforcement and first responders in the event of protests or security incidents.

Kirkwood Community College plans to decommission its 417-foot-tall wind turbine. It comes after the school stopped offering the class that utilized the piece of equipment. The turbine has stood since 2012 and it generated more than $2 million in revenue. But that’s only half what the school was hoping it would bring in. The decommissioning will start in the spring of 2025.

Monday, the Iowa City-City Council voted to defer the final vote on banning the sale of kratom indefinitely. The council passed the two prior readings on the ban. This would have only banned the sale of kratom, not the use of the substance in Iowa City. Kratom can produce opioid-like effects. It’s largely unregulated and is not approved by the FDA.

Surveillance footage shows a man, accused of murdering a Marion woman in February, buying a machete just hours before she died. McKinley Louisema is on trial for the kidnapping and killing of 20-year-old Melody Hoffman. She was from Marion. Her body was found at Lily Lake in Amana. Prosecutors argue he killed her because he was in a relationship with another woman who was pregnant.
