Marion police say the father of a five year old boy faces murder charges after he admitted to strangling him early Tuesday morning. 45-year-old Matthew Schleier is in custody and faces first degree murder charges after being taken into custody at his Willowbrook Drive home. Police say they were called to the house around 6 in the morning, where first responders performed life-saving efforts.  The child later was pronounced dead at the hospital. Schleier is being held in the Linn County Jail this morning.

 

Iowa City Police arrested a woman accused of stabbing a pregnant woman, then cutting another woman’s face who jumped in between them. Police arrested 35-year-old Lacey Bode on several charges, including assault, after the incident at a bar early Sunday morning. Police officers say a woman who is six months pregnant tried to walk behind the bar at The Haven, when another woman pushed her. The pregnant woman reportedly told that woman not to touch her because she was pregnant, and the woman pulled out a knife and repeatedly tried to stab her. She did have a small stab wound on her stomach. Another woman jumped in between the two; police say her face was cut, and she needed stitches.

 

Union employees at the Cargill corn mill in Cedar Rapids have been on strike for almost a month now. And they’re about to lose their employer-supported health insurance. Employees at Cargill with Teamsters Local 238 went on strike on October 1, demanding competitive wages and respect from the company. Friday is the first of November and will mark one month since the strike began. Friday will also be the day the striking employees lose access to health insurance benefits. Cargill announced earlier this month that striking workers are eligible for benefits through COBRA.

 

Cedar Rapids is looking for volunteers for the city’s snow buddies program. It partners up volunteers with people who need their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice. Snow buddies must be at least 18 years old and provide their own snow removal equipment. They’re asked to clear sidewalks for their buddies within 24 hours after snowfall has ended in Cedar Rapids.
