DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – A collision that blocked the U.S. 61 bridge in Dubuque Tuesday for several hours happened when the driver of an RV failed to yield when entering the highway. The driver of the RV entered the highway from the 16th Street ramp, but collided with a semi-tractor trailer when merging, causing the semi to crash into a guard rail. It happened at around 3:08 p.m. on Tuesday. When the semi hit the guard rail, a side fuel tank split open, causing 135 gallons of diesel fuel to spill out onto the roadway. Cal Motsch, a division chief for the Dubuque Fire Department, told the Telegraph Herald the semi’s haul of oats did not spill in the crash. No injuries were reported. The northbound lanes of U.S. 61 were closed for about three hours while crews worked to clean up the crash and the resulting spill.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The Des Moines police officer who was shot in the head last week is now out of the hospital. It happened on Sept. 16 when Des Moines Police Officers Cade Moritz and Jacob Boekhoff tried to pull over a car. The driver sped off and crashed about a block away. Police said the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Joshua Green, of Carlisle, pulled out a gun and shot at the officers. Officer Moritz was hit in the head and Officer Boekhoff was hit in the arm. Three officers fired back at Green, killing him. The Des Moines Police Department shared photos of Moritz walking out of the hospital on Tuesday. Officer Boekhoff joined Moritz as he left the hospital. The two took pictures together surrounded by family and friends. The police department said it was a huge step forward in his recovery. He now moves on to a rehabilitation program.

DELAWARE COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – Delaware County Emergency Management and all Delaware County Fire Chiefs have enacted a burn ban for all of Delaware county, effective immediately. The ban is being enacted as a result of little rain and dry conditions, leaving the county vulnerable to a large wildfire. Outdoor fireplaces, barbecue grills, properly supervised landfills, and the burning of trash in incinerators or metal burners with no openings greater than one square inch are still allowed under the ban. If a person needs to burn something other than the allowed applications, a burn permit can be requested from their local fire chief. The ban will be enforced until further notice.
