The Cedar Rapids Community School District plans to sell Arthur and Garfield Elementary Schools. Both closed last month. Eastern Iowa Arts Academy is buying Arthur Elementary. The nonprofit plans to repurpose the building to include studio rental space and art classrooms. The academy agreed to a partnership with the district to offer free arts programming. Developer Steve Emerson is buying Garfield Elementary. He plans to turn it into apartments and community space. High school students in trades classes will be able to help with the renovation work, and the district will get two apartments leased to employees or students. The Board of Education still needs to vote on the agreements.
U.S. officials say they’re working to bring home four Cornell College instructors who were stabbed in China over the weekend, including David Zabner, Iowa Representative Adam Zabner’s brother. The instructors were at a park in the northeast part of the country when officials say a Chinese man stabbed them. All four victims are expected to survive and no students were on the trip. Officials arrested a 55-year-old Chinese man who bumped into one of the instructors, then allegedly attacked all four of them. Beihua University in Jillin City provides funding for Cornell instructors to teach portions of computer science, mathematics and physics courses over a two-week period.
This week a multi-agency operation is checking on sex offenders to ensure they’re following the rules. There are 379 registered offenders in Linn County. Over five days, Cedar Rapids Police, state police, Linn County Sheriff’s officials and U.S. Marshals went door to door making sure those offenders are in compliance. Leaders with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation say agencies try to do these compliance checks at least once a year.
The public pool in Marion is back open after the parks and rec department had to drain and refill it last week. A glass light underwater shattered and workers had to drain the pool for safety reasons. Lap swim times and open swim times at the Marion pool are different for the rest of this week. And it will close at four each afternoon for swim lessons.
