Two parents have filed a lawsuit after a hayride crash that injured several middle schoolers last month. Bronson McCulley and Amy Stewart filed the suit in Keokuk County District Court on Monday. Dozens of seventh graders were thrown off a hayride after it crashed into a ditch off a gravel road in What Cheer last month. Several children were injured, with at least two requiring hospitalization. Two parents of an injured 12-year-old filed a lawsuit that names David and Victoria Heady as the hosts of the party and the driver of the hayride, Daniel Brubaker. The suit claims Brubaker was operating the trailer negligently, resulting in their daughter being thrown to the ground and run over by the trailer, from which she sustained “life-altering” injuries. It also claims the Headys failed to protect the children from injury. David Heady recently resigned as a Keokuk County Sheriff’s Deputy. The lawsuit doesn’t specify a dollar amount but asks a jury to determine it at trial.

PFAs, known as forever chemicals, are used to make products stain resistant or waterproof and don’t break down in the environment. They’re linked to cancer and other health conditions. The city says it’s working with engineers to develop a better filtration system to reduce and remove them from the water.
