Waterloo police identified the man they say was stabbed and killed over the weekend. Officers responded to reports of a fight and stabbing at an apartment building on Langley Street early Saturday morning. There they found 29-year-old Jeffrey Schmitt unresponsive. He died at the scene. So far, there have been no arrests.

 

People in Clayton County spoke out at an informational meeting about a proposed cryptocurrency data center near Elkader. A Bitcoin mining operation approached the county, but isn’t able to run under the county’s current data center ordinance. Some fear the center would be too loud at night. Community members also expressed concern about power usage, but leaders with the Allamakee Clayton County Energy Cooperative say a big customer could help stabilize power rates.

 

RAGBRAI riders are getting closer to eastern Iowa as the Day Four route takes them from Boone to Marshalltown. It’s an almost 70-mile ride with an 1,800-foot climb in elevation today. The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa will also travel on part of the historic Lincoln Highway as they cycle through Gilbert, Nevada, Colo, and State Center.

 

University of Iowa Health Care has completed renovation of its Burn Treatment Center, expanding the state’s only burn center from 16 to 21 beds. The changes include the addition of two private hydrotherapy rooms.

 

Cedar Rapids Police went shopping–taking more than 100 students to the store for back-to-school supplies. It’s an annual tradition put on by the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Charity. It selects a group of schools, and takes recommendations for families that would be a good fit for the program. The goal is to get students prepared for the school year with anything they could need.

 

And the Iowa State Fair first announced new fair foods; now it is telling us about its new drink line-up. For non-alcoholic fare… there’s Apple Cider Floats, Banana Creme Latte, Jalapeno Lemonade, and Red Bull Vanilla Berry Cherry. New drinks containing alcohol are Cotton Candy Beer, Frozen Red Bull Watermelon Margarita, and Watermelon-Mint Moscow Mule. The Fair runs August 13-23.
