Losing the Base
Stereotypes are dangerous things, especially where politics is concerned. It causes candidates and elected officials to make presumptions and paint with too broad a brush.
I have a friend who is a person of color and is a political independent—because, as he says, the Republicans don’t think to ask for his vote, and the Democrats take his vote for granted.
The outcry from those on the political left about the UFC show on the White House lawn this past Sunday is interesting. Those who say the event desecrates the White House apparently don’t remember the Bill Clinton years…or the so-called pride month demonstrations on the lawn during the Joe Biden years.
It also ignores who seems to be attracted to watching such events—the very voters who the Democrats used to call their base. Again, stereotypes are dangerous…but the core crowd seems to be young males, perhaps union members. Isn’t that the very demographic that the Republicans have been siphoning off, leading to election victories over Democrats?
I myself did not watch the event this past Sunday, and can count on one hand the number of times I’ve watched any UFC event for more than a passing glance while moving from one channel to another. But it seems to be popular…which again makes one wonder why Democrats were so bent against this taking place.
Well, the President seems to like it. The crowd at other similar events he attended like him. The fighters themselves seem to like him. And the fighters themselves seem to refer to religion and faith a lot in interviews.
Helps understand where lines have been drawn regarding today’s major political parties.
