IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Three downtown Iowa City businesses owned by Hawkeye Hotel closed permanently by the end of the weekend after the properties failed to sell at auction earlier this month. Each of the affected businesses—The Chauncey Hotel, SpareMe Bowling and Arcade, and Hotel Vetro—received closure notices last week, according to staff and management, marking a difficult turning point after the failed auction. The closure announcement came without warning. According to the Corridor Business Journal, Green State Credit Union issued the eviction notice for the properties owned by Hawkeye Hotel. A Green State spokesperson stated that the credit union initiated the foreclosure process as a last resort to protect its members, while acknowledging the significance of the properties in Iowa City’s downtown area. The Film Scene movie theater, located inside the Chauncey Hotel, remains open and is not affected by the business closures.

The surgical error required three additional corrective operations. Nelson now lives with chronic pain as a result of the complications. During the trial, the Mayo Clinic admitted wrongdoing but contested the amount of damages awarded to Nelson.
