WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – A man is now charged with first degree murder for a deadly shooting last month in Waterloo. Jessie Harmon III, 31, from Waterloo, is accused of shooting a 21-year-old Nyavais Johnson, of Waterloo, on Boston Avenue just after 11 a.m. on November 21. Johnson died at the hospital from his injuries. Waterloo police say they are still asking for anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators at 319-291-4340, ext. 3.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Title Guaranty (ITG) launched one of the nation’s first title theft products to shield homeowners from property fraud. Title theft, also called deed theft or seller impersonation, is rapidly increasing nationwide as scammers become more sophisticated. The scammer fraudulently claims ownership of your property to sell or rent it. ITG’s new coverage will pay for all legal defense fees and associated costs if a title is stolen and needs defending. “Iowa Title Guaranty is committed to staying ahead of emerging threats, and we’re proud to be among the first in the nation to offer this important protection,” said ITG Director Dillon Malone. “We’re grateful for our strong partnerships with real estate attorneys, abstractors and closers throughout the state who help make this coverage available to homeowners starting today.” The title theft coverage is currently available in two forms for residential properties.

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa (KCRG) – The Davis County Community School District canceled classes Friday after confirming a respiratory illness case at the elementary school. Davis County officials say a whooping cough (pertussis) case has been confirmed. The number of cases is unknown at this time. The district also canceled all activities on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This includes the elementary concert at 12:30 p.m. and middle school concert at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. According to HHS, the Davis County whooping cough vaccination rate was just over 38% last year. The District Superintendent also leads the Moulton-Udell district, that cancelled school this week due to 30% of students and staff with the flu.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) – Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) is conducting layoffs across Iowa, officials confirmed Thursday. IDT says 4.7% of the company’s Iowa workforce has been affected but did not give a specific number of people. The company is headquartered in Coralville. The timing of the layoffs is unknown at this time. “Integrated DNA Technologies has made the intentional decision to restructure parts of our business, which includes refocusing resources, to sustain future growth and support our long-term business objectives,” a company’s spokesperson said in a statement to TV9. “These measured changes reflect IDT’s ongoing transformation as a global leader in genomics and positions our business capabilities to evolve with changing customer demands.” IDT collaborates extensively with global health and scientific partners, aiming to facilitate widespread genomics breakthroughs, according to the company’s website. According to the company, affected workers have been provided with severance and support packages. The company cites the decision as part of a restructuring plan as, “refocusing resources, to sustain future growth and support our long-term business objectives.”
