MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (KCRG) – A 30-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident Saturday night in Marshalltown. Melanie Nelson was crossing South 3rd Avenue near the intersection with East Main Street around 10 p.m. when she was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The vehicle fled the scene and has not been found, officials said. Anyone with information can contact the Marshalltown Police Department.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) – Charges are pending for two men after a gun was fired during a fight late Thursday night. Cedar Falls police were called to the 800 block of West 28th Street around 10:20 p.m. Thursday for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found two men had been fighting and a single gunshot had been fired. The two men were taken to the hospital with minor injuries caused during the fight, but no one has been found injured as a result of the gunshot. The investigation is currently ongoing.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – One person was injured in a shooting near a Cedar Rapids elementary school Friday during trick-or-treating. At approximately 6:26 p.m. Friday, authorities responded to a shooting in the 6600 block of 1st Avenue West, near West Willow Elementary School. Upon arrival, officers located an adult woman suffering from gunfire-related injuries. She didn’t need hospitalization. Police found two juvenile boys who matched witness and video descriptions. Officers detained both boys. Police say the school was not involved in this incident.
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Catholic priest who advocated for immigrants facing ICE deportations has died following an illness. Father Guillermo Trevino was the pastor of both Saint Joseph Church in Columbus Junction and Saint Joseph Church in West Liberty. Father Trevino had recently returned from Rome, where he shared efforts to support immigrants with Pope Leo. Earlier this month, he spoke at an immigration forum in Iowa City about his conversations with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. He was urging lawmakers to stop deportations of those in the country illegally. His godson, Pascual Pedro, a 20-year-old from West Liberty, was deported to Guatemala three months ago.
