Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has directed the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services to prepare for possibly delays to SNAP due to the government shutdown. Funding for food assistance programs like SNAP is set to run out at the end of the month if the shutdown continues. Reynolds says she’s ordered Iowa HHS to hold regular calls with Iowa’s food banks. And she is reviewing the state’s food insecurity response plan from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Governor is also touring the state as she prepares her legislative agenda which she will present in January before state lawmakers. One of the biggest issues that didn’t pass last legislative session was property tax reform. In Dubuque County yesterday, Reynolds said lawmakers can’t just shift the tax burden from localities to the state, saying “it’s either this pocket or this pocket it’s same person that we’re going after.”

An immigrant advocacy group says a student from Des Moines Public Schools has been deported after federal immigration agents detained him last month. The group Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice says agents detained the 18-year-old on September 30 during a check-in at the federal building in Des Moines. He was taken to the Hardin County jail. He then went to a detention facility in Louisiana before being deported. The group says the student is from Central America. But it hasn’t released any other information about his background or why he was detained or deported.

North Liberty may end its bus contract with Coralville and is now looking for other transportation options to serve residents. North Liberty’s City Council has not yet officially ended the bus route contract with Coralville, but it needs to give notice by November 1 and the service wouldn’t end until July. City officials are looking for other options to ensure riders aren’t left in a lurch.

And Dubuque is extending its $100 airfare rebate for passengers who use the Dubuque Airport. The incentive for round-trip airfare purchases at the Dubuque Regional Airport is now available through the end of 2025. The non-profit called Dubuque Initiatives says more than 750 passengers have used the incentive.
