A Black Hawk County supervisor faces two counts of third degree sexual abuse. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation confirms it arrested Christopher Schwartz at his Waterloo home Wednesday morning. He’s in the Black Hawk County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Both incidents happened in August of 2023. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office is handling the case. Schwartz is currently in his third term as a supervisor.

 

The Iowa City Police Department added what could be one of the first fully electric squad cars in the state. The city has purchased just one vehicle to test out and see how it fits into their fleet. The city conducted a study last year and found this option also fits in with the city’s environmental goal. Many departments have taken a closer look at electric squad cars because of their ability to quickly accelerate and keep up with other electric vehicles on the road.

 

Gov. Reynolds signed an executive order requiring all state government departments to verify employment eligibility prior to hiring state employees. The move comes in the wake of the arrest of Des Moines’ former school superintendent, who was taken into custody by ICE agents. His resume and citizenship status has come under scrutiny since. The Governor’s order requires government agencies to verify immigration status or U.S. citizenship before granting state-issued occupational and professional licenses.

 

The Marion City Council is going to listen to the public tonight over plans to offer tax breaks to the company that is buying the city airport. 530 Investments LLC is looking for $5,000 in annual tax relief for the next decade by using a Tax Increment Financing, or TIF, district to continue airport operations. The company agrees to keep the airport running during that time.

 

The Mount Vernon Marching Mustangs will represent Iowa in the 2025 Thanksgiving Day Parade at Walt Disney World in Orlando next month. The band will perform on the steps of Cinderella’s Castle on Thanksgiving morning, November 27.
