The Trump Administration is expected to soon announce a $10 billion aid package for soybean farmers hurt by China’s embargo of the American crop. That boycott came after the President announced hikes in tariffs of Chinese products to the U.S. China had purchased 25 percent of all American soybeans in recent years, more than $12 billion in soybeans last year alone. The president says he is also working on a soybean deal with Beijing. But farmers are worried that deal could come too late to sell any of this year’s crop to their biggest customer.      

 

Three Iowa breweries are combining their production. Backpocket Brewing and Peace Tree Brewing will relocate to Single Speed Brewing Company in Waterloo. That’s located in the former Wonder Bread factory. The combined operation will be called “The Brewery at Wonder Bread.” It’s set to open early next year. Single Speed says the City of Waterloo still needs to approve expansion of its facility.    

  

The Texas-based firm that vetted the now former superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools is defending itself after the district filed a lawsuit. Ian Roberts is accused of living in the U.S. illegally and illegally possessing four guns. He’s also been accused of lying about his credentials during the hiring process in Des Moines. In a statement, the firm says in part “that the district has decided to litigate about their choice of candidate is unfortunate and unwarranted. We will answer those claims in a court of law.”

 

Noelridge Park Church in Cedar Rapids will close after nearly 70 years. The church has been a part of the community since 1956. The Pastor said this decision is based on financial constraints and a decline in attendance. The church plans to release the details about its final service soon. Following the closure, a local Congolese congregation plans to use the building.      

 

The Iowa Department of Transportation says it will shut down the Mississippi  River bridge at Lansing on October 20. That means drivers will need to take a 45 minute detour to the next nearest bridge to travel between Iowa and Wisconsin until the new bridge is completed. The Transportation Department says plans for a car ferry service are moving ahead after federal and state government agencies issued permits and provided other environmental clearances.
