Alliant Energy won’t build a new power plant near the Eastern Iowa Airport. This comes after the airport commission released a report that showed a third party evaluator said the power plant would be a safety problem for flights. Alliant had announced it would build a new power plant in a location near Fairfax saying it would be cheaper than two other sites it’s considering. In a letter released yesterday, however, Alliant Energy told the city of Fairfax it’s now “deprioritizing” that location.
The former superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district is facing a federal gun charge. Ian Roberts from Guyana was the superintendent for Des Moines Public Schools. He was arrested by federal immigration agents last week. Agents say they found a gun, a knife, and $3,000 in cash in a school district car Roberts was driving. If Roberts is not a U.S. citizen, he would not be allowed to possess a weapon. Roberts has being held by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The latest case of bird flu is now reported in Calhoun County, northwest of Des Moines. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the USDA, the case was found in a commercial turkey flock.
The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office says a landslide that resulted in a boulder crashing into a home and killing a man started after a neighboring property was using large equipment. 76-year-old Michael Stok died. The Sheriff’s Office says the boulder fell down a steep cliff and struck the home located on Red Oak Road; that’s located about 10 minutes northeast of Harper’s Ferry. The Sheriff says it’s unclear if the people operating the equipment on the bluff near Stok’s home were authorized to do so. He also says the county won’t be recommending any criminal charges because it ruled the landslide as an accident.
Expect to see a lot of pink this month. Mercy Medical Center and Alliant Energy buildings are just a few lit up in pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is part of the annual Power of Pink Celebration, which will include the 35th anniversary of the Especially for You Race against Breast Cancer on Sunday.
