People living in a tent encampment outside of Shelter House in Iowa City have until 5 o’clock this afternoon to remove their belongings. Shelter House says it’s trying to meet the needs of the unhoused while also passing a city inspection to keep its permit for the neighboring shelter that houses 70 people. Shelter House says six spots have opened up in its facility, but there are about 14tents on the property that need to be gone by tonight.

 

A Cedar Rapids man is charged with murder for a shooting near Trailside Elementary, which used to be Arthur Elementary. Prosecutors charged Kaleek Lewis with first degree murder, attempted murder, going armed with intent, and use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime. Court documents say Dedric Arnold and another man had gone to a home this week on 27th Street Northeast to talk to a person about “lost property.” Lewis shot at them, hitting Arnold, who later died.

 

New numbers show enrollment is up at two of Iowa’s public universities and down at a third. Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI each released their numbers for the fall semester. Enrollment is up more than two percent at both Iowa and Iowa State. It’s a different story at UNI, where there are 79 fewer students compared to last fall.

 

A new survey from the Professional Educators of Iowa shows that out of 3,000 recipients, only 500 responded. Nearly 400 said they are frustrated by the stress the workload brings, lack of communication from administration, and what PEI is calling a ‘lack of respect for the position”. The group says it will share the results of this survey with lawmakers when the legislative session begins in January.

 

An Eastern Iowa high school football team’s season is now up in the air after its head coach resigned. In a post on Facebook, former Highland head coach Cory Quail said he stepped down out of player safety concerns. He said his team participation is low and injuries have added up, writing on Facebook that it was not safe to be out on the field last Friday night. Highland cancelled its next two games, including tonight’s homecoming game.
