Cedar Rapids police say someone shot a minor on the southwest side. Officers responded to a call to the parking lot of the Union Apartment Complex on 21st Avenue at around 1:30 yesterday afternoon for a report of gunshots. Someone drove the girl to the hospital, and we don’t know an age other than that she’s a juvenile. She is expected to survive. Police ask anyone with information to call them.
The CDC confirms Iowa’s first human case of West Nile Virus is a middle-aged adult, between 40 and 60 years old, from Emmet County in northern Iowa. The case comes as the state just reported high levels of the virus in mosquito monitoring across the state. Last year, 21 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile Virus. One of them died.
A Des Moines man is accused of stealing nearly $60,000 in electronics from Iowa State University. Prosecutors charged Donavan Cirksena with theft, burglary, and fraud. According to court documents, investigators say there was a rash of burglaries and thefts on the ISU campus between late October last year and July this year. Officers were alerted to an eBay account connected to Cirksena with items matching descriptions of the stolen items. He was arrested in 2021 on similar charges.
Iowa’s latest unemployment numbers are out, and they’re holding steady. July’s unemployment rate sits at 3.7 percent. That’s the same as last month, but up from 3.1 percent one year ago. Education services added the most jobs in July, but retail and wholesale took a downturn, along with manufacturing.
McGregor city officials say peak fall leaf tours won’t be affected by a planned road project. The city says the Iowa Transportation Department agreed to postpone the planned roadwork along Highway 76 between Marquette and McGregor. It was supposed to start after Labor Day and last until mid-October. This change comes after complaints from local residents, business owners, and community leaders regarding the timing of the project during peak fall leaf tourism season.
