CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – More information has been shared regarding the Cedar Rapids police chase that ended with an officer involved shooting. The chase ended in the field beside the Oak Hill Manor apartment complex on the southeast side of town. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has confirmed the driver was the only person injured after shots were fired at the end of the chase. The driver is being treated in the hospital for injuries. The Cedar Rapids Police Department was hosting a “National Night Out” event near the scene of the shooting. Officers asked people there to leave after the chase ended. In videos witnesses shared with KCRG, several gunshots can be heard after the car came to a stop. Officials have not confirmed the identity of the driver, nor have they shared what prompted the chase to begin. Officers involved in the chase are on paid leave as the investigation continues. DCI does not have plans to share more information as the investigation continues.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said The National Guard is preparing for a mission supporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to The Gazette. Governor Reynolds told reporters the Iowa National Guard will help with clerical tasks. This decision was made despite protests around Iowa in support of immigrants. Reynolds stated The National Guard will focus on logistics and processing, but no specifics have been confirmed. She says Iowa will become the latest state to coordinate with ICE officers.
WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – A plea hearing has been set for a man accused of shooting three people at a Waterloo bar earlier this year. The shooting took place on New Year’s Day in the 2000 block of Hawthorne Avenue, at SAC’s Neighborhood Pub. According to a release from Waterloo Police, three people were shot while in a parked in a lot next to the bar. Two of the victims were taken to the hospital for their injuries. An investigation led police to arrest Sadorieous Collins in connection to the shooting. Collins is charged with two counts of willful injury causing serious injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, control of a firearm by a felon, and willful injury causing bodily injury. His plea hearing is set for August 7.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids man was sentenced to prison for possessing firearms as a felon. 28-year-old Kyler Goettsch, of Cedar Rapids, pled guilty to one count of being a prohibited person in possession of firearms in May 2024. According to court documents, Goettsch admitted to having two pistols following prior convictions of four felonies and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. Officers arrested him after a brief standoff where he disregarded commands that caused them to draw their weapons, according to evidence. Goettsch was sentenced to eleven years in federal prison and a three-year supervised release.
