Iowa Republican U-S Senator Chuck Grassley is calling for full transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case. Lawmakers, including many Republican supporters of President Donald Trump, have called for the Trump administration to release the files related to the case. Grassley, who heads the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, says, “People have the right to know the details behind this investigation.”

 

A Waterloo man who was already convicted on child pornography charges in 2008 was sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison for receiving child sexual abuse material in 2023 and 2024. Jeremy Moore was sentenced to federal prison yesterday. Moore also received an additional 18 months in federal prison for violating his supervised release after probation officers found more porn on phones that were in his possession while he stayed in a halfway house. The judge also found Moore had failed to comply with the sex offender registry, failed to participate in mental health treatment and substance abuse testing.

 

Johnson County is set to have new vending machines which will contain a life-saving drug for opioid overdoses. The Health Department says it plans to have three machines containing naloxone in Iowa City, one in Coralville and one in North Liberty. In addition to naloxone, the machines will also have other items like gun locks, wound care kits and contraceptives such as Plan B. Johnson County Public Health says funding from opioid settlements and public health grants helped cover the costs. The county says the machines could be operational next month.

 

The Jackson County Sheriff’s office in Minnesota issued a correction after a RAGBRAI cyclist who died on day two of the ride was misidentified. In an updated release, the sheriff’s office now identifies the victim as Mark Spoo of Colorado. First responders were called for a collapsed rider just north of the Minnesota border. He was taken to a hospital in Iowa, where he was pronounced dead. The original news release incorrectly identified the victim as a different man from Texas.

 

Bicyclists are taking part today in the shortest trek in the weeklong ride across Iowa. This morning, cyclists will leave Cedar Falls and head to Oelwein, logging 38.4 miles. RAGBRAI ends Saturday as bikers dip their tires in the Mississippi River in Guttenberg after starting last Sunday in Orange City.
