AFSCME Union leaders are calling on the state to stop a plan to outsource medical staff at Iowa Correctional facilities. AFSCME Council 61 says the Iowa Department of Corrections wants to outsource all medical, dental, mental health, and pharmaceutical services and replace the current electronic health record system. The union says it agrees the system needs modernizing, but opposes what it calls a broader privatization scheme in Iowa’s prison system.
The Waterloo Police Department identified the man killed in a shooting Sunday night in Waterloo. Officers found A’ Tarion Key ‘Won De ‘Shawn Spates dead in the 1700 block of Mulberry Street. They also found a woman nearby with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Police officers haven’t said if the shooting was targeted nor if they’ve made any arrests in the case.
A Linn County jury saw crime scene photos in the trial against a Tama County woman accused of murdering her husband. Karina Cooper is facing a first-degree murder charge in the 2021 death of Ryan Cooper. Bodycam photos show Karina clinging to her husband’s body as officers arrived on the scene. Forensic analysts also took the stand today describing fingerprint, DNA, and shoe print evidence. Testimony is scheduled to continue this morning.
A soldier with the Iowa National Guard died in a head on crash in rural Mount Pleasant. The Iowa State Patrol says it happened last Wednesday on Highway 218. Specialist Marin Rose was driving a car Wednesday on Highway 218 when he crossed the center line and hit a semi. Rose was 19 and from Fort Madison. The Iowa National Guard says he was a transportation driver for the 1133rd Transportation Company based in Iowa City. A visitation and funeral is set for this Thursday in Fort Madison.
The Iowa State Fair has released its list of new foods that’ll be available to hungry fairgoers this year. For an entree, perhaps you’d like a Chicken Pickle Ranch Rocket On A Stick, or perhaps a Footlong Hot Cheetos Corn Dog. If you want to go high end, there’s the High Roller Roll–lobster roll topped with caviar and edible gold leaf. And for lunch, perhaps Jalapeno Popper Egg Salad washed down with a Green Apple Cream Slush and topped with a desert of Cap’n Crunch Berry Funnel Cakes. The fair opens August 7.
