Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird says she is not running for governor. She was considered a strong contender to run as a Republican in the governor’s race. But instead, she says she is running for re-election for Iowa Attorney General next year. She says she plans to support the Republican nominee for governor, as well as the entire Republican ticket in Iowa.
President Donald Trump is heading to Iowa, set to speak at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines tonight to launch celebrations for America’s 250th birthday. Trump took to Truth Social, saying “I’ll also tell you some of the GREAT things I’ve already done on Trade, especially as it relates to Farmers. You are going to be very happy with what I say — Should be a BIG Crowd!”
Opening statements are over and testimony will be heard today in the trial of Karina Cooper, the Tama County woman accused of killing her husband 4 years ago. Prosecutors say Cooper shot her husband Ryan Cooper in the face as he sat in a recliner at their home. Prosecutors say Cooper was having an affair with Huston Danker and planned the murder with him. They say the two exchanged Snapchat messages about it. The defense says Cooper didn’t do it. They pointed the finger at Danker for killing Ryan Cooper. Danker is also charged with murder. His trial is scheduled for next month.
University of Iowa researchers say many smoke and vape shops across the state are selling to underaged people. Research by Dr. Anthony Fischer found 24 percent of tobacco retailers had a violation in tobacco sales between 2017 and 2023. Dr. Fischer says several factors contribute to these illegal sales, including what he calls a significant increase in vape and smoke shops opening over that period.
Legal fireworks can be shot off today and tomorrow across Iowa, even in cities where it was once prohibited. But the fireworks can only be discharged on private property you own. It’s still illegal to use fireworks on sidewalks, streets, parks, trails, public spaces, and any public right-of-way.
