One person is dead and a Dubuque County sheriff’s deputy is seriously hurt after a traffic stop in Cascade led to an officer-involved shooting early Tuesday morning. It happened near northbound Highway 151 in Cascade where traffic was diverted for about 7 hours yesterday. The Dubuque County Sheriff’s office says the man pulled out a gun during the traffic stop. That’s when shots were fired. A Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office deputy and the suspect were hit. The suspect was pronounced dead after being taken from the scene. The deputy is in stable condition, but suffered serious injuries due to the gunfire. The shooting is currently under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

 

Court documents show a federal judge temporarily blocked a new Iowa law set to take effect yesterday. It would add regulations for pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, essentially middlemen in drug cost negotiations. Supporters of the bill have said PBMs have lead to the closures of hundreds of pharmacies in Iowa. But a lawsuit argues the law is unconstitutional. A hearing is set for July 14.

 

Vice President J.D. Vance had to cast the tie-breaking vote in the U.S. Senate to pass the Administration’s massive tax and spending cuts bill. The multi-trillion-dollar bill would unlock tax cuts and provide funding boosts for national security. Iowa U.S. Senators Charles Grassley and Joni Ernst both voted for the bill. The bill now heads to the U.S. House, where Representatives are expected to return today to start debate. President Trump has called to have the bill on his desk by Friday, Independence Day.

 

Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell says she’s running again for mayor. O’Donnell says housing, growing the city’s workforce, and investing in neighborhood services will be her focus if she’s re-elected. She was elected after a runoff election in December of 2021.

 

People are preparing for President Trump’s visit to Des Moines on Thursday. Security will be extra tight before and while the president is at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
