From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
The Superintendent and two former staffers of the Waterloo Community School District are under investigation after an incident of misconduct. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners is now reviewing Central Middle School teacher Michael Thomas’ teaching license. They’re also reviewing licenses for former Central Middle School Principal Frederick Zimmerman and Superintendent Jared Smith. A child’s mother says it stems from an incident when she says Thomas asked her son to buckle his belt due to a broken wrist. Thomas then harassed him after he reported the incident to the district. The District says it cannot respond due to privacy laws but says the District takes all allegations of staff misconduct very seriously.
A Cedar Rapids Goodwill says it’s dealing with repeat theft and vandalism at its Scotty Drive donation drop off location. Goodwill’s Retail Project Manager says it happens regularly at several of its locations. The buildings now have new security cameras installed. Clothing and other items are taken from the donation bins and scattered on the ground if not taken. Goodwill suggests you donate during business hours when your items are stored inside the building.
State Auditor Rob Sand says a small Muscatine County community’s city clerk misused thousands of dollars in taxpayer money. Sand says the investigation found former Conesville City Clerk Yamira Martinez misspent roughly $127,000 of taxpayer money. Sand says that includes more than $47,000 in improper payroll and reimbursements issued to Martinez, and more than $12,000 of improper purchases using the city’s debit card. He adds he’s now passed the investigation over to law enforcement.
The 16th Avenue bridge over the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids will be shut down again this morning to continue testing the new flood control system. Tests yesterday are being followed by upgrades to make the flood wall better able to roll into place when the river starts to rise to flood levels. In this case, new casters are being installed on the bottom of the walls. The flood control system is tested every year. The bridge is scheduled to re-open at 1 this afternoon.
