Iowa lawmakers are a step closer to calling for a special session. The Iowa House of Representatives secured enough signatures to bring lawmakers together for a special session. They want to override the Governor’s veto on eminent domain reform. That bill would have restricted the use of eminent domain for private projects. State Senators may not agree with the call for a special session, with Republican leaders saying they don’t have enough votes to override the Governor’s veto.

 

A Linn County man convicted in a crash which killed a woman and seriously hurt her two-year-old child more than a decade ago faces a new vehicular homicide charge in the case. Brandon Schaul is serving time in the Anamosa State Penitentiary after being convicted in 2015. Court documents say he was drunk and high when he crossed the center line with his pickup truck and hit a van head on in 2013 near Central City. The crash killed Rachel Denny and left Bella Denny paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator. Court documents say Bella died in November at the age of 13 due to complications from her injuries. Schaul has asked to have the new charge dismissed.

 

Iowa’s former state librarian will not serve any prison time for sending explicit photos and videos to someone he thought was a teen. Police arrested Michael Scott last November. Court documents say the 53-year-old messaged an undercover Florida deputy posing as a 14-year-old boy on a messaging app. Scott pleaded guilty in April. A judge sentenced him to two years probation last Thursday.

 

Democrat Christina Bohannan says she is once again running for Iowa’s first congressional district. She has lost to Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks in the last two elections. Bohannan says she doesn’t think Republicans are focusing on bringing down costs for most families.

 

ESPN SportsCenter has added the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville to its “50 States in 50 days” nationwide tour. On July 25, ESPN will record and broadcast live from the Dyersville location. SportsCenter is visiting the Field of Dreams during a youth baseball tournament and will provide details on the history of the site as well as ongoing updates.
