Prosecutors have charged a man from Howard County with four counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. Investigators say 45-year-old Mark Zweibohmer shot at three Howard County deputies and a state trooper at his home in Elma. According to criminal complaints, he shot at three Howard County deputies and one Iowa state trooper. His criminal history indicates he faces charges from September that include burglary, harassment, and interference with official acts causing bodily injury.
The Iowa National Guard will hold one of its largest deployment ceremonies for troops preparing to leave Cedar Rapids today. A ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 this afternoon to send off members of the 334th Brigade Support Battalion which provides a supply and a maintenance unit providing fuel, food, and transport to the Second Brigade. Yesterday, troops with an engineering battalion were also sent out from Cedar Rapids for their Middle East deployment.
Iowa now ranks second in the nation when it comes to the rate of new cancer cases in the nation. Linn County Public Health is participating in a statewide 99 Counties Project which gives people a detailed look at cancer cases within each county. The two most common types in Linn County are breast and prostate cancer. The director of the Iowa Cancer Registry says it’s important to have a healthy diet and exercise, test well water yearly, and get routine cancer screenings.
Cedar Rapids is conducting a survey to improve parking in downtown. The City wants to hear from the public about parking and transportation habits as well as any challenges in neighborhoods. This includes downtown, Kingston Village, Czech Village, and Newbo. The city says the feedback will help shape a new strategic parking plan for downtown. The survey is open on the city’s website through June 11.
A Cedar Rapids recreation farm is closed temporarily after the city says it found a contagious virus in one of the goats. The city says Old MacDonald’s Farm in Bever Park is closed today out of an abundance of caution. The department says it found a case of ‘sore mouth’ among the goats there. The virus is common in goats and sheep, and can be transmitted to humans through direct contact. The closure allows crews to disinfect the area. If you recently visited the farm, the city encourages you to talk with your doctor if you have health questions. The farm is set to reopen on Saturday.
