A house fire in Sigourney left two people dead. The names of the victims from Monday’s fire have yet to be released. It’s unclear what caused the fire at the home on Highway 149 just south of Sigourney. There were sounds of possible explosions at the site but Fire Chief Bill Halleran says the intensity of the heat set off an airbag in a car in front of the home.
The Dubuque County Attorney’s Office, Iowa DCI and the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office say they are suspending the investigation into the homicide of Charles Jaeger in his home 40 years ago. Investigators say they received new information on the case in 2023 that leads them to believe their main suspect is already serving two life sentences in another state. They are not releasing the suspect’s identity nor a motive in the case in case they decide to prosecute this individual in the future.
An Anamosa man will spend up to 25 years in prison after a fatal car crash in Linn County in February of 2023. Zachary Twachtmann was convicted of driving under the influence when he hit another vehicle driven by 46-year-old Dylan Vascik. In a plea deal, Twachtmann entered a plea of guilty to one count of Homicide by Vehicle – Operating Under the Influence.
The state’s system to file for unemployment will be down for the next week as it undergoes upgrades. The old system went dark at the end of Tuesday. Iowa Workforce Development says that system required Iowans to use several websites to file for unemployment. Under the new system, Iowans will be able to complete all of the steps on iowaworks.gov. The web site will be back up next Tuesday, June 3.
And a speller from eastern Iowa got through the first two rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Lindsey Jessen is the only Iowan who is taking part this year. She’s 13, in 8th grade, and attends the Marion Home School Assistance Program. In the first round, Lindsey correctly spelled “neem”… a tropical Old World tree. In the second round, she correctly spelled the word “emancipatory”.
