From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
Three people were arrested, but police are looking for more information, after a large fight over the holiday weekend in downtown Cedar Rapids. Officers from Cedar Rapids Police and other agencies responded to a shots fired call in the 200 Block of 2nd Avenue SE around 1:30 Sunday morning. No one was hurt and nothing was damaged. The three arrested suspects face disorderly conduct charges.
A search will continue this morning in the Des Moines River for a man who fell in after a boating accident on Sunday. Just before 10 a.m. Sunday, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office responded to rural Eddyville for a report of two people who had been thrown from a boat. 47-year-old Waylon Straube of Eddyville is still missing. The Sheriff’s Office says a woman was rescued safety from the river with the help of two boaters.
A Wisconsin driver is lucky that the train that hit their vehicle was going as slow as it was. Mar-Mac Police say the person suffered minor injuries over the holiday weekend after their vehicle failed to stop at a rail crossing and was hit by a Canadian Pacific Kansas City train on River Way in Marquette. The driver, from Prairie du Chien, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Police say the train was going 17 miles per hour at the time due to nearby Memorial Day festivities. The established speed limit in that area is usually 25 miles per hour.
Memorial Day mattress sales are also an opportunity to make sure some people have a bed to sleep on. Willis Dady Homeless Services is accepting old mattresses to be recycled throughout the week. There is a fee of $10 a mattress for Linn County residents and $35 for non-county residents. You can bring your old mattress to Willis Dady Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
