DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau/KCRG) — State Senator Lynn Evans, a Republican from Aurelia, found himself in two unexpected positions this month–challenging his party’s leadership at the Iowa Statehouse, and planning a run for Congress. Evans announced that he has formed an exploratory committee to run for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. The decision follows decisions from two other prominent Republicans. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she will not seek re-election, leading current Rep. Randy Feenstra to form an exploratory committee for governor. That brought an unexpected opportunity for Evans to look at running for Congress. Evans’ profile became more widely known when he joined 11 other Republican senators at the Iowa Statehouse and demanded that their party’s leadership stop blocking debate on eminent domain restrictions that could impact a carbon sequestration pipeline. Evans said that he would take that mindset to Congress if he gets elected. Evans is the first Republican to form an exploratory committee for the congressional seat. Ryan Melton, an insurance manager, has announced his third straight Democratic campaign for the seat.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Linn County says it’s “just starting” the conversation on reopening a nuclear power plant outside of Palo. The Linn County Planning and Zoning Commission met Monday on the topic. The Duane Arnold Energy Center shut down in October of 2020. But the demand for energy is rising with data centers expanding in eastern Iowa. Linn County Planning and Development Director, Charlie Nichols, says this is the first conversation in a series of many. Many people at Monday night’s meeting told the commission they support bringing back nuclear energy. One person mentioned a safety concern. The feedback is set to be presented to the Planning & Zoning Commission at its next meeting on June 16.
