A North Liberty family is without a home after an early morning fire Wednesday. The North Liberty Fire Department said it received a call for a mobile home fire in the 100 block of Gulfview Court around 5:30 in the morning. Fire crews were able to put out the fire and the family was able to escape. The North Liberty Fire Department says it’s unsure of the extent of damage, but the family will be living with relatives in the area.

 

The American Red Cross is helping a Cedar Rapids family after a fire forced them from their home Christmas Eve. Fire crews quickly brought the fire under control in the 500 block of 16th Street NE. The fire, caused by faulty wiring, was limited to a second floor bedroom. The residents were able to safely get out of the home.

 

State investigators say they should be releasing new details in the coming days about an officer-involved shooting in Dubuque. They say two officers shot and hurt a 16-year-old boy on Christmas Eve. It happened in the 800 block of Alpine Street just before noon. Police say the boy had warrants out on adult charges, though police did not specify those charges. The boy ran from officers. During the chase, police say the teen showed a knife and officers started shooting. The teen went to the hospital, but his condition is unknown. The two officers are on leave, which is department policy.

 

With the major shopping season now behind us, retailers are preparing for people to start making returns–and a lot of them. According to a new report from the National Retail Federation, returns are expected to reach $890 billion in 2024. That’s 17% higher on average than usual, up from nearly $750 billion last year.

 

An Illinois woman is teaming up with a union to raise awareness about correctional work mental health in Iowa and Illinois, after her husband took his own life in 2023. The American Federation of Government Employees, Local 4070, raised $3,000 for the non-profit Gray Matter Collectives. The group helps educate people on mental health, recognizing the signs of suicide, and knowing how to check on your own mental health.
